Board of Directors
Dominique F. Baly, Board Member
Mr. Baly was President of the Bioscience Division of Millipore Corporation and a member of the Corporate Executive Committee through 2008. He was previously President of the Lab Water Division and Millipore International. Mr. Baly also served as General Manager of the Analytical Division.
Melvin D. Booth, Board Member
Mr. Booth is a Board Director of Millipore Corporation and served as President and Chief Operating Officer of MedImmune, Inc. from 1998 to 2003. Prior to MedImmune, Mr. Booth was President and Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Human Genome Sciences. Mr. Booth was also President of Syntex Corporation.
William W. Crouse, Board Member
Mr. Crouse served as General Partner of HealthCare Ventures Funds I through VI and is a Limited Partner of HealthCare Ventures Fund VII. Mr. Crouse served as Worldwide President of Ortho Diagnostic Systems, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Previously, he was a Division Director of DuPont Pharmaceuticals Company, responsible for international operations and worldwide commercial development activities. Before joining DuPont, he served as President of Revlon Health Care Group's companies in Latin America, Canada, and Asia/Pacific. He also held management positions at E.R.Squibb & Sons, a pharmaceutical company. Mr. Crouse currently also serves as a director of several private biotechnology companies and as a member of the Boards of Trustees of Lehigh University and the New York Blood Center.
Scott E. Deeter, Board Member
Mr. Deeter is Ventria’s President and CEO. Mr. Deeter created and led a joint venture between Cargill and F. Hoffmann-La Roche that entered the natural vitamin E and pharmaceutical intermediates market. He also served as President and CEO of CyberCrop and was a member of the Technology and Life Sciences Group of Salomon Brothers. He holds a BSc in Economics from University of Kansas, an MBA from University of Chicago, and an MSc in Economics from London School of Economics.
David Dwyer, Board Member
Mr. Dwyer is a General Partner and Founder of Vista Ventures (www.VistaVC.com), a Colorado-based early and growth stage venture capital firm established in 2000. For many years he was engaged in the full time practice of law and contributed to the growth of Dwyer, Huddleson, & Ray, P.C. into one of the premier law firms in Colorado.
William H. Rutter, Esq., Board Member
Mr. Rutter, an entrepreneur who has successfully developed a series of companies in diverse business areas including oil and gas, beverage, and restaurants. He was a partner with the Denver, Colorado, law firm of Sherman and Howard.
William J. Rutter, Ph.D., Board Member
Dr. Rutter is Chairman of Synergenics LLC and along with Edward Penhoet and Pablo Valenzuela, founded Chiron Corporation, one of the earliest biotechnology companies. Dr. Rutter served as Chairman from inception until 1999. He is a member of the United States National Academy of Science. He served on the board of overseers at Harvard University, the board of trustees of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and several private company boards. He has received many honors, including the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment and the 2003 Biotechnology Heritage Award from the Chemical Heritage Foundation. Dr. Rutter joined the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) as Herzstein Professor and served as chair until 1982. He was director of UCSF’s Hormone Research Institute and became professor emeritus of the department.
Thomas N. Urban, Chairman
Mr. Urban served as the Chairman, President, and CEO of Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. Mr. Urban is a board member and previously served as Chairman of the Carnegie Institute. He is a board member of National Tropical Botanic Garden, Intoximeters and Reach Systems. Mr. Urban served as Mayor of the City of Des Moines, Iowa.
Pablo Valenzuela, Ph.D., Board Member
Dr. Valenzuela, along with Edward Penhoet and William J. Rutter founded Chiron Corporation, one of the earliest biotechnology companies. At Chiron, Dr. Valenzuela was head of R&D and led a group responsible for development of the vaccine for hepatitis B, the world's first recombinant vaccine. Also under his direction, scientists cloned and sequenced the genome of HIV, discovered the virus for hepatitis C, and developed a robust production system for several recombinant proteins. Dr. Valenzuela is director of la Fundacion Ciencia para la Vida (The Foundation of Science for Life), which he founded. Research at the foundation focuses on two areas: the Hantavirus, which affects the rural population of Chile, and on infectious diseases of the Chilean salmon industry. Dr. Valenzuela received the Chilean National Award for Contributions to Science and Innovation.
